According to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), critical care specialists—also called intensivists—are qualified to diagnose, treat, and support critically ill and injured patients, particularly trauma victims and patients with multiple organ dysfunction. They also work to coordinate patient care among the primary physician, critical care staff, and other specialists. Critical care medicine differs from emergency medicine in relation to the length of treatment. Critical care medicine involves long-term treatment of patients, whereas emergency medicine is short-term treatment.
