Gastroenterology - Practice area 138

Gastroenterology is the subspecialty of internal medicine focused on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, and liver. Gastroenterologists, often referred to as “GI doctors,” treat conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux, peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, irritable bowel syndrome, and pancreatitis. They perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using endoscopes to visualize internal organs.
