Approaches to help physicians cope with stress and burnout

 

As more physicians admit to being stressed or burned out, it is becoming increasingly important for healthcare organizations to focus on how to help physicians deal with these issues. The following is a list of items that both individual physicians and organizations can implement to reduce burn out.

Individual:

  • Counseling
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Yoga/meditation/mindfulness therapy
  • Exercise
  • Hypnosis
  • Biofeedback
  • Medication


Organizational:

  • Educational programs to teach coping skills
  • Support groups
  • Facility changes, e.g., on-site fitness center, enhanced doctors’ lounge and dining room, meditation room
  • Sponsorship of group meditation session, sports activities, mindfulness workshops
  • Physician leadership development programs
  • Support for employed group practice development with greater physician autonomy
