Average inpatient day costs by state

Connecticut had the highest average cost per inpatient day at state or local government hospitals, according to 2013 statistics compiled by the Kaiser State Health Facts. The average cost in Connecticut per day was $3,275. This was followed by Utah with an average cost of $2,843, and Washington with $2,768.

At non-profit hospitals, California had the highest average cost per inpatient day at $3,500, followed by Washington at $3,361 and Oregon at $3,206. The states with the highest average cost at for-profit hospitals were North Dakota ($3,714), Delaware ($3,476), and Alaska ($2,792).
