Credentialing and kiosk care

Recent news includes attempts to simplify care, both for physicians in rural hospitals and for New Jersey patients wondering whether there’s a “doctor” in the house. Another simple idea in the headlines this week might not be so simple, however. A Midwestern entrepreneur’s idea for kiosk-based physician visits via high-definition video and wall-mounted devices is gaining support from investors and healthcare systems as a simple way to extend care to rural and underserved areas, according to a report in Forbes. But how simple would it be to credential or privilege kiosk-based practitioners, particularly if they’re seeing patients across state or national boundaries? Will new standards emerge for this kind of teleconsult and its offshoot, remote prescribing and dispensation ? Stay tuned.
