Develop a new technology committee

Hospitals faced with the prospect of adopting many new technologies may consider establishing a technology assessment committee. This committee would have a diverse membership from hospital personnel to physician personnel that would help with the following:

  • Aligning new technologies and procedures with the strategic mission of the hospital and the hospital’s patient population
  • Developing and implementing a systematic approach to evaluating new technologies and procedures
  • Developing plans for technology or procedure adoption and implementation
  • Assisting with the financial analysis of a new technology, including the true cost of the new technology and the expected return on investment
  • Setting the performance metrics for a new technology, including financial, use and outcome metrics, as well as safety
  • Serving as a portal for longer-term technology evaluation (e.g., looking out one, three, five, and 10 years down the road to determine what new technologies are likely to hit the market and which may be of interest to the hospital)
