Do physicians still want to be medical staff leaders?
Recent stories and studies point to the fact that new/younger physicians are looking for a work-life balance and have less interest in taking on additional responsibilities that will take away from their personal time. Is this trend making its way to seasoned physicians as well? In an article for Physician's Money Digest, blogger Physician On FIRE, discusses the top 5 reasons to become a locum tenens. One of the reasons he states is to be free of medical staff leadership positions.
"Freedom from the entanglements of local hospital politics is a vastly undervalued benefit of being a locum. You won’t be expected to attend early morning or after hours meetings. Your input on policies won’t be sought. I’m talking about the policies and bylaws that live in a binder (or folder on the intranet) that are rarely seen or used, but require revision and renewal at regular intervals."
