Fifth lawsuit filed in superbug case
A 76-year-old man infected with a drug-resistant “superbug” at a Los Angeles hospital has sued the manufacturer of a medical device that caused the illness. The case, announced Tuesday, is the fifth lawsuit related to the bacterial outbreak at the facility, his attorney said. Plaintiff Domingo Gomez, who was infected by a contaminated device during an endoscopy at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, suffered significant harm from the infection, according to his lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center officials have acknowledged that seven people were infected with carbapenem-resistant enterobacteria, or CRE, during endoscopies at the hospital between October 3, 2014, and January 28 of this year. Two of them later died.
