Florida facing shortage of physician specialists

A study released by the Teaching Hospital Council of Florida and the Safety Net Hospital Alliance of Florida found that the state could face a shortage of nearly 7,000 physician specialists by 2025.

The study, conducted by HIS Global, found that this shortage represents a 19% shortfall of specialists in 19 specialties. The specialties with the largest projected gaps are general surgery, psychiatry, and rheumatology. The study found a 7% overall shortfall of physicians by 2025 if current trends continue.

The study did find that the state is projected to have an abundance of specialists in geriatric medicine, pediatrics, and dermatology.
