Judge approves $190 million settlement between John Hopkins and secretly filmed patients

A judge recently approved a $190 million settlement that John Hopkins has agreed to pay to settle claims that a gynecologist, Nikita Levy, secretly filmed and photographed patients during examinations.

Levy committed suicide last year, just days after he was fired from John Hopkins after a co-worker reported his activities. Investigators found more than 1,300 photos and videos in a search of Levy’s home and office.

Following the judge’s approval, John Hopkins has 30 days to appeal, although that seems unlikely since the hospital’s lawyers have supported the settlement. After that period, the hospital has 14 days to deposit the funds into an account for victims.

To be part of the settlement, Levy’s former patients have until Nov. 14 to apply. As many 9,500 former patients may be eligible. However, before any money is awarded, a judge must approve an allocation plan.
