At the Credentialing Resource Center Symposium in Las Vegas, March 12-13, 2015, speaker Todd Sagin, MD, JD, will address several hot-button medical staff issues. Below, he answers a question about the MSP’s role in some of these issues.
Q: What role does the MSP play in turf battles? In peer review?
A: The MSP is a critical resource to medical staff leaders. The MSP should be well versed in the tactics that can be used to prevent or ameliorate turf battles before they become problematic for the medical staff. The MSP should also understand the basic approaches to contemporary peer review and help medical staff leaders identify best practices. While it is often the quality department that directly supports peer review activity, it is the medical staff services department that should ensure adequate physician leadership education in this responsibility. It also typically falls to the MSP to know if medical staff Joint Commission requirements are being satisfied and to ensure peer review information is utilized properly in the credentialing process.
