Op-Ed: All ’independent practice’ for APRNs is not created equal

As Connecticut closes in on passing a bill to allow advanced practice RNs (APRNs) to practice independently, Robert M. McLean, MD, immediate past-Governor of the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), urged caution in a recent Op-Ed piece on the CTNewsJunkie website. Nineteen states already allow independent practice for APRNs, McLean noted, but “has anybody done some legislative homework and examined exactly how ‘independence’ is defined in the laws of those 19 states? As usual, the devil is in the details.” Regulatory oversight, education requirements, and prescriptive authority definition vary greatly among these states, he wrote.
