Specialties that will need more physicians

With a projected physician shortage reaching as high as 90,000 by 2025, the country will need to increase the number of physicians it produces each year. According to data from 2012, more than a quarter of the workforce was 60 years old or older.

The following are the specialties with the highest percentage of physicians who are over 55 years of age and nearing retirement:
-    Occupational medicine (78%)
-    Non-invasive cardiology (50%)
-    Ophthalmology and orthopedic surgery (both at 44%)
-    Neurology (43%)
-    Gastroenterology (42%)
