Women as physician leaders

A Medscape survey of more than 3,000 female physicians found that 53% held a leadership position. Of those in leadership positions, 40% said their work and personal lives were balanced and 57% said their work gets in the way of their personal lives. However, 72% said they were very or somewhat happy with their careers, which is slightly higher than those not in leadership positions (63%).

Other highlights from the survey results include:
•    Nearly the same percentage of leaders and non-leaders reported being happy with their personal lives outside of work, at 83% and 82% respectively.
•    The factors cited by leaders that helped them attain their positions were excelling at the job (72%), building alliances (44%), and support from spouse or partner (39%).
•    The top reasons leaders gave for pursuing their positions were to be a positive influence for others (70%) and to effect change (68%).
