October 31, 2014
An Annapolis, Maryland woman pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft after she used forged documents to pose as a physician assistant for a pediatrician.
Shawna Michelle Gunter faces up to 22 years in prison for forging a physician assistant certificate and a diploma from Howard University, which she used to gain employment in 2013 with a pediatrician. From August 19 to 29, Gunter treated 200 patients without supervision and wrote more than 400 prescriptions. A sentencing hearing for Gunter is scheduled for January 30, 2015.
As a result of Gunter’s action, the practice that had employed her was subject to $20,000 in fees for submitting hundreds of false Medicaid coverage claims.
