Physicians across the country struggling with burnout
According to a recent report by the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), 83% of surveyed healthcare professionals view physician burnout as a major issue at their respective institutions. While this number is down from 96% in 2016, the majority of the 2018 respondents believe the problem of burnout has become significantly worse in recent years.
Eighty-two percent of these respondents identified physician burnout as an issue at the organizational level. Physician burnout is a critical issue because ultimately it affects the quality of care patients receive.
Recommendations for decreasing burnout include delegating more of a clinician’s administrative tasks to other staff members so that he or she may have more face time with the patient. Respondents also suggested investing in more efficient electronic health record systems and streamlining workflow to remove the burden of records and documentation from physicians.
