Program aims to retrain non-active physicians

The Physician Retraining & Reentry program, developed by professors at the University of California San Diego, is looking to mitigate the physician shortage nationwide by placing experienced physicians in vacant primary care positions.
A beta version of the program launched last spring, resulting in three graduates. Currently 36 physicians are participating in the program.
The online program aims to update the skills and knowledge of physicians looking to reenter the workforce. It consists of 15 subject matter modules, which physicians complete at their own pace, followed by an examination and on-site practical evaluation of clinical skills.
