Researchers build online physician shortage prediction tool

A new interactive modeling tool developed by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill aims to forecast the need for physicians based on geographic location and specialty.

The creators of the FutureDocs Forecasting Tool claim it is the first of its kind to show the supply and demand for physicians in various specialties at a national, state, and local level. The goal is to allow hospitals and policymakers to properly plan for physician shortages that currently exist or will exist in their area.

At a local level, hospitals can use the modeling tool to decide what type of healthcare worker to staff and hire, the researchers said. While at the state and federal level, the tool can be used to determine where GME federal funding for residencies and fellowships should be directed.
