NAMSS releases best practice criteria for credentialing

The National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) has released the Ideal Credentialing Standards (ICS), a list of 13 criteria for establishing an applicant’s qualifications for medical staff membership and clinical privileges.

To determine a candidate’s professional competencies, the ICS recommends that MSPs use primary sources to verify the following 13 criteria:

·         Proof of identity
·         Education and training
·         Military service
·         Professional licensure
·         DEA registration and State DPS and certification
·         Board certification
·         Affiliation and work history
·         Criminal background disclosure
·         Sanctions disclosure
·         Health status
·         National Practitioners Data Bank reports
·         Malpractice insurance
·         Professional references

All information to support the 13 criteria should be primary-source verified within 120 days at the time of credentialing review, according to the ICS document.
