Nebraska expands AHP practice environment

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts last week signed LB 107, giving nurse practitioners (NP) the ability to practice without a physician present. The bill was first introduced last year and the state legislature passed it. However former Governor Dave Heineman vetoed it.
LB 107 will provide Nebraska citizens with more opportunities to get healthcare because NPs will no longer need a physician’s agreement, which can be difficult to obtain, supporters of the 2015 bill said. Instead, NPs will be approved to help others in their practice area. NPs will still need to undergo 2,000 hours of clinical practice supervised byphysicians. The law goes into effect 90 days after the close of the current state legislative session.
