Garner support for switching to core privileges
No one can convert to privileging alone. You need to get the right people on your side for the transformation to occur. Securing the support of these allies can be tricky, but it’s pivotal to your success. You will need support primarily from three bodies:
- The medical staff
- The administration
- The governing body
These groups need to know how terribly important the process is, and everyone involved must be committed in terms of both time and resources.
Most facilities are unlikely to be able to pull together the entire medical staff on any single issue, and a major change to the privileging process is even less likely to draw unanimous support. Instead, turn your focus to locating physician champions. Physician champions will provide immeasurable support throughout the conversion to core privileging. The backing of one physician champion can make all the difference in the world.
It will take significant resources in terms of time, personnel, and money to make a change of this significance; thus, bringing administration onto your side will be key.
Finally, the buck stops with the hospital’s governing body. You will need to know how to convey your purpose, goal, and plan of action.
