Florida hospitals say yes to unlicensed physician as CMO

A debate is stirring on whether top-ranking physicians in hospitals should maintain their licenses to practice medicine. The American Medical Association and others have questioned the wisdom of having a non-practicing physician as a chief medical officer (CMO), and one hospital system with facilities in Florida says it is often “inadvisable” for a practicing physician to be a CMO.

More than a year ago, the CMO at the 496-bed Northwest Community Hospital in Chicago left his position after it was revealed his medical license had expired more than a decade earlier, and he could no longer practice medicine. Since then, however, the physician has reportedly been back in the CMO role at 156-bed Florida Hospital DeLand and at the nearby 175-bed Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City.
