AMA: Most physicians still own their own practice
September 20, 2013
Although there has been a shift toward hospital employment, 53% of physicians were self-employed and 60% of physicians worked in practices that were wholly owned by physicians, a 2012 survey of physicians by the American Medical Association (AMA) shows. The survey, which is cited in a recent AMA Policy Research Perspective, found that only 23% of physicians worked in practices that were at least partly owned by a hospital and another 5.6% were directly employed by a hospital.
