Working and spending smarter is one of the primary concerns for Kay Brown, CPMSM, CPCS, director of medical staff services at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings, Mont. Each year she goes though a full budgeting process, looking at everything from staffing and equipment to education and travel.

"I want to focus my energy and resources into making sure that we're producing as we should and that we have the proper tools and ­equipment to be able to work on a daily basis," says Brown. Once she's worked the budget to cover the necessary resources for daily functions, she turns her attention to additional resources. Whether it's bringing in a locally based motivational speaker or putting together a presentation on credentialing for new staff members, Brown finds creative alternatives to traditional educational expenses.
