Tax scam targets physicians
May 9, 2014
By the time James King, a former physician living in Billings, Montana, filed his taxes, his identity had already been stolen. As a consequence, his return was rejected, he said. A growing number of physicians across the country have reported being victimized by what appears to be the same scam. Fraudsters use the physicians’ Social Security numbers, names, addresses and dates of birth, then populate the rest of the form with fabricated information. Law enforcement organizations and state medical associations are investigating whether a data breach or multiple breaches are behind the scam.
