NPDB lays out requirements for CVOs

Credentials Verification Organizations (CVOs) perform National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) queries as part of the credentialing process. CVOs have special responsibilities to the NPDB, according to the latest Data Bank News release. A CVO may be registered with the Data Bank either as an authorized agent or as an entity, depending on how the organization functions.

A CVO should register as an entity if the organization conducts its credentialing centrally, has a centralized peer review process, and has one decision-making body that oversees facilities. The organization should also register as an entity if a practitioner being granted privileges at one facility receives privileges at all facilities.

A CVO should register as an agentif the healthcare entity for which it is performing primary source verification conducts its own credentialing and grants privileges to provide healthcare services only in its facility. In this case, the CVO should be registered as a separate healthcare entity for each facility it represents, according to Data Bank News.
