Educate practitioners about the OPPE/FPPE process

OPPE reports should not catch practitioners by surprise. Create a timeline around which all practitioners will receive OPPE/FPPE education, particularly if the medical staff is adopting a new reporting process. Once the new process is in place, inform practitioners of when they will receive data. In addition to the initial education, consider strategies for longer-term communication, which will likely include the same communication avenues.

Once the initial communication has been transmitted, keep the forum open to allow program leaders the opportunity to communicate updates about the OPPE/FPPE process and to allow practitioners the opportunity to provide feedback. When changes are occurring, communication should come from both directions to decrease any misunderstandings. Medical staffs should revisit their communication plan on a regular basis (perhaps annually) to ensure that the plan addresses current messaging, goals, and indicators.
