Many states struggle to retain physicians after residency

In 2016, about 47% of physicians were active in the state where they completed their residency, according to a new report from the Association of American Medical Colleges. California had the highest percentage of physicians retained from residency with 70%, while New Hampshire had the lowest retention rate at 28%. Other states with low retention rates were Delaware (29%), Wyoming (30%), and Rhode Island (30%).

The report also examined retention rates for physicians who completed their undergraduate medical education and residency in the same state. Overall, about 67% of these physicians remained in their states to practice. Hawaii topped the list, retaining nearly 87% of physicians, while New Hampshire again came in last with about 38%.
