Medical Board: Physician's blood alcohol content was five times the legal limit

A new accusation filed by the Medical Board of California, claims that Jason Lane, MD, arrived to work at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Diego with a blood alcohol content of 0.39 percent, which was nearly five times the legal driving limit.

The Permanente medical group fired Lane three days after the October 22, 2013 incident and the medical board prohibited Lane from practicing medicine in California in an interim order of suspension filed on June 30. The board has requested a hearing based on the new accusation filed last week, in which Lane’s license could be revoked.

Lane told investigators he used alcohol to self-medicate for post-traumatic stress disorder from his four months of serving as a trauma ICU physician in Afghanistan. Since the incident last October, Lane has been proactive in seeking treatment for his alcohol dependence.
