Preparing medical staff leaders for performance conversations
The success of a medical staff leader’s conversation with a practitioner who has outlier performance results hinges on how adept the leader is at doing the following:
- Reviewing and understanding the reasons for the outlier status leading to FPPE
- Communicating the results to the practitioner in an effective manner
In preparation for performance conversations, consider developing a formal training program for medical staff leaders, particularly for those who haven’t yet had the experience of delivering feedback.
Create a concise and relevant curriculum that incorporates classes with both clinical and business leaders at the organization. Consider combining or modifying existing leadership development programs by tailoring them for practitioners. Include training on conflict resolution, communication skills, and process improvement. (Resources with Lean Six Sigma or project management experience will be most helpful.) Invite executive leaders to give presentations on the organization’s vision, health system economics, health reform, and strategic planning process.
Some topics are best taught through interactive workshops, facilitated discussions, or forums as opposed to theory-based presentations. Facilitators should present courses using the most effective method for learning.
