Report: Family medicine is the most in-demand specialty

According to Doximity’s 2019 Physician Employment Report, the most in-demand physician specialty in the United States is family medicine. The 10 most in-demand specialties and subspecialties include the following:

1. Family medicine
2. Internal medicine
3. Emergency medicine
4. Psychiatry
5. Obstetrics and gynecology
6. Neurology
7. Radiology
8. Anesthesiology
9. Pediatrics
10. Cardiology

However, internal medicine ranked as the number one in-demand telemedicine specialty, followed by psychiatry, radiology, and then family medicine.

Additionally, the report also examined the level of demand for physicians in U.S. cities, finding that El Paso, Texas has the largest demand. The 10 metro areas with the highest demand include the following:

1. El Paso
2. Miami
3. Cleveland
4. Phoenix
5. Denver
6. Portland, ME
7. Seattle
8. Honolulu
9. Minneapolis
10. Los Angeles

To complete the analysis for the report, researchers collected data concerning 27,000 physician job listings posted on Doximity in 2018-2019 for the top 50 metropolitan areas in the U.S.
