Rural physicians paid more

Physicians in rural areas earn an average of $1,500 more in salary a year compared to their colleagues in more urban areas, according to data compiled by physician social network Doximity.

 

It also found that emergency medicine, family medicine, occupational medicine, and psychiatry were the most in-demand specialties. Salaries for those specialties were the highest in Florida, Texas, and Minnesota, and were lowest in California, Massachusetts, and New York.

 

Doximity recently launched its Career Navigator tool, a map which uses anonymous data from 18,000 physicians to allow users to search salaries for 48 specialties down to the county-level. It believes the differences in salary are likely due to issues of supply.
