Should an OPPE profile include six general competencies?

Q: Do the six general competencies need to be included on the OPPE profile?

A: A lot of people use that as a route for [selecting quality measures]. They pick measurements that reflect one or more of the competencies. You don’t need to have even six indicators at this point. You select indicators for various specialties—so for example, the general surgeons should not be looking at the same thing the pathologists are looking at for indicators of competence.

The Joint Commission simply asks that the six competences be considered as measure of performance, and then most organizations that I see use the labeling of those competencies, then they put performance indicators within. But you don’t need to have all six, you could have one, two, or three—whatever would work appropriately for the organization.
