Survey: Nurses play a larger role in patient care management

Eighty percent of registered nurses believe “healthcare professionals besides physicians” have increased their role in patient care management, according to a survey conducted by University of Phoenix. It also found that one-third of RNs have seen an increased role in doing tasks traditionally done by physicians. The survey contains the opinions of 500 registered nurses and administrative staff.

RNs stated in the survey that they expect their job role to change within the next five years, including:

  • More involvement with information systems (43%)
  • More involvement with healthcare regulations (43%)
  • Increased role in patient care planning (40%)
  • Increased leadership role at facility (36%)

“Our nurses play a pivotal role in getting patients back to health in an increasingly demanding environment,” said Dr. Lisa Radesi, academic dean for the School of Nursing at University of Phoenix. “As the healthcare industry continues to evolve to support an aging population, advanced technologies and a multifaceted insurance system, we must recognize the demanding work our nurses do and prepare them to be successful in this complex environment.”
