Calif. adverse event reporting requirement takes effect

As of January 1, accredited outpatient surgery settings must now report adverse events to the California Medical Board, rather than the state’s Health Department, no later than five days after the event has been detected. If an adverse event is ongoing or is an emergent threat to the welfare, health, or safety of patients, personnel, or visitors, it must be reported no later than 24 hours after it has been detected. The board may assess civil penalties If an accredited outpatient surgery setting fails to report an adverse event.
