ACPE address disruptive behavior among healthcare professionals
The pervasive issue of disruptive behavior among physicians and other healthcare workers has spurred the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) to release a book on identifying and eliminating disruptive behaviors. Taming Disruptive Behavior, written by Phillip Hemphill and William Martin, covers topics such as the impact, costs, and risks of disruptive behavior, the roles of human resources, the legal department, quality management, and the medical staff, and dealing with various healthcare professionals.
The stress associated with healthcare reform and a lack of coping skills may lead to an increase in disruptive behavior, according to Martin. Peter Angood, MD, ACPE’s CEO, notes that the negative actions of a few individuals can often have a tremendous impact on the entire organization. He adds that “eliminating disruptive behavior is essential to creating a culture of safety.”
