AMA asks CMS to delay Open Payments registration period

The American Medical Association (AMA) has asked CMS to postpone the deadline for physicians and teaching hospitals to register and review the Open Payments system to March 31, 2015.

CMS took the system offline on August 3 due to technical issues and brought it back online on August 15. The current deadline for physicians to review and seek corrections to data reported by device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and group purchasing organizations is September 8.

The AMA cited the system’s “confusing and inaccurate information, lack of reliable functionality, and excessive time required to register and review reports” in its request for additional time.
