Collaboration between CVOs and medical staff services is key to a successful partnership
File review is another area where the CVO regularly collaborates with medical staff services personnel…This team reviews verified documents against applications to clarify any discrepancies to identify red flags to be carefully scrutinized by medical staff leaders when making privileging decisions. There are occasions when information from sources is unfavorable to the extent that legal counsel becomes involved, as well as medical staff services leaders. The CVO quality review team works closely with these stakeholders to obtain additional information from the applicant or from sources to facilitate review by physician leaders, credentials committees, and medical executive committees. There are times when the CVO identifies a problem early on and will notify legal counsel and/or the medical staff services director so that they can intervene if necessary. Medical staff services leaders appreciate this collaboration, which helps reduce risk to the organization and patients.
According to Monique Benavidez, CPMSM, CPCS, a quality review supervisor for Banner Health CVO, “Having a centralized review process eliminates redundancy by not having too many hands in the pot when reaching out to the applicant, programs, references, etc. for additional information…by working collaboratively with MSPs, the CVO’s quality review team supports requests from credentials committees, and this often benefits multiple facilities.”
This important relationship can have a significant impact by reducing the workload for facilities and providing medical staff leaders with information needed for credentialing and privileging decisions.
