Healthcare jobs up slightly in May; hospitals see decline
June 14, 2013
Healthcare job growth slowed in May compared with recent months, according to preliminary data released last week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hospital jobs, which had shown robust growth earlier in the year, declined by 5,900 in the latest figures and nursing care facilities shed 2,700 positions.
Overall, however, the healthcare sector—including ambulatory healthcare services, physician offices, nursing and residential care facilities as well as hospitals—saw a seasonally adjusted uptick of 10,700 jobs in May. Job growth was highest in ambulatory care services, which saw an increase of 6,500, or more than 12%. Outpatient care services added 3,500 jobs.
